With the vote to allow gay marriage, the Presbyterian Church USA has stepped into an evolving tradition affirming the experience of thousands of lesbians, gay, bi-sexual, and transgender Christians around the world. The Presbyterians join the Episcopal Church and United Churches of Christ in actively sanctioning and blessing gay marriages. With the decision, the church challenges traditional gender roles for married couples as well as an historic theological pantheon of familial relationships. The pronouncement marks a controversial shift in protestant ideals reflecting proportional changes in western concepts of gender identity.
