The Challenges for Presbyterians

Whatever decision the General Assembly of the mainline Presbyterian Church makes on same-sex marriage must go before district-level presbyteries to be approved, says an executive with the denomination.

W. Samford Turner, executive presbyter of the Presbytery of South Alabama, said that elected commissioners meeting at the 221st General Assembly in Detroit this week are expected to decide on a variety of "overtures" brought before the group, including the recognition of same-sex marriage. But the final decision lies with the 173 presbyteries across the nation, half of which must approve any amendment made to the governing Book of Order.
