They Refused to Let Their Church Crumble

It's a cherished tradition at St. Paul's Catholic Church in Chicago's Pilsen neighborhood that parishioners do much of the work on the building themselves. In the 1890s German immigrants living in the parish built the church, including twin spires that soar 245 feet over the working-class neighborhood's taquerias along Cermak Road and aging brick workers' cottages on the side streets.

Today's parishioners, largely Latino, have repaired furniture, painted walls and helped landscape as part of a multiyear restoration of the handsome old church and rectory on South Hoyne Avenue near Cermak.
