Justice Kennedy Signals Trouble for Mandate

A sharply-divided US Supreme Court engaged in an intense debate Tuesday over whether owners of for-profit businesses can be forced by the government to provide their employees with certain contraceptive drugs and devices that offend their religious beliefs.

After 90 minutes of oral argument it was clear the nine-member court was split down the center and that justices on the left and on the right were defending entrenched positions. That often means Justice Anthony Kennedy holds the key to the final decision.
