Yoga instructor Becca Walker lights two votives while four women place their yoga mats into positions. A soft mix of Indian chants and music fills the chapel at the First Presbyterian Church in Rutherford. The space is bathed in soft, colorful sunlight peering through stained glass windows onto the hardwood floors and wooden domed ceiling. The church seems like an odd spot for people to be introduced to yoga, but after offering a Sunday morning class beginning last fall, yoga at the First Presbyterian Church has blossomed into almost a daily event. The church even held yoga on Christmas and New Year's eve.
Yoga is a source of fitness and mysticism through which people can get in tune with their mind, body and spirituality, so for Walker and the education committee, which came up with the idea, hosting the yoga program is a natural fit.
