Mormons Down Under

Landing in Utah near midnight, the snow is so thick that the airport closes almost as soon as the wheels of our plane touch down. Outside the terminal, arriving passengers compete with the stranded to find transport through the snowdrifts into Salt Lake City, the seat of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, or LDS.

Later, our taxi slides around airport access roads. We get lost, then lost again on the perimeter roads, and lost some more as we plough on into town, past cars that have slid into ditches, past a jack-knifed semi-trailer glowing eerily among flares and throbbing police lights. The taxi driver, Greg, seems at once bewildered by the landscape about him and unfazed by his confusion.
