The Mormon church plans to build its first house of worship in downtown Chicago, part of a larger push into major cities across the county where membership is on the rise.
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints plans to spend more than $10 million to construct a six-story, 39,000-square-foot building at 816-828 N. Clark St. in River North, said Jared Doxey, director of North American field operations for the Salt Lake City-based church. The church has signed a contract to buy the property, currently a parking lot, from U.S. Bank, he said, declining to disclose a price.
