Two Mennonite conferences in Congo marked anniversaries this summer, but their longevity wasn’t the only reason to celebrate. Both took historic actions recognizing women’s equality in Christian ministry.
The conferences lifted restrictions on how women can use their spiritual gifts: One ordained a woman for the first time; the other decided to allow women’s ordination. They did in one century what some North American Mennonites and their European ancestors took 450 years to accomplish.
