Mitt Romney tried to settle the debate about the role of religion in politics with this comment in an interview by Cathedral Age, the Washington National Cathedral’s magazine.

Romney said: “The notion of the separation of church and state has been taken by some well beyond its original meaning. Religion is seen as merely a private affair with no place in public life. The Founders . . . did not countenance the elimination of religion from the public square.”
