Liberal Baptist evangelist and “Red Letter Christian” Tony Campolo praised United Methodism’s controversial General Board of Church and Society (GBCS) at the denomination’s General Conference in Tampa, Florida. He was speaking at the traditional GBCS banquet, which was May 1.
A former counselor to President Bill Clinton during the Monica Lewinsky crisis, Campolo was introduced by GBCS General Secretary Jim Winkler, who joked: “This is the time when we rally around social justice as a church and listen to a Baptist preacher.” GBCS is United Methodism’s official lobby agency on Capitol Hill and is consistently liberal in its stances.
