There are two groups opposed to Mitt Romney’s candidacy based on his Mormon beliefs. One is using Romney’s Mormonism for political expediency. The other’s animus is deeper and based in theology. The latter group is far more likely to support Romney in November.
I call the first group The O’Donnells, named after the self-described socialist MSNBC commentator Lawrence O’Donnell, who has launched highly publicized attacks on Romney and the Mormons, primarily using 19th century statements from Mormon leader Brigham Young. There’s a lot of fertile ground for O’Donnell, Bill Maher, Maureen Dowd, and others. I can think of several post-1950 Mormon doctrine books that contain now-renounced doctrine, but I’ll let O’Donnell’s producers do their own opposition research.
