At the March 2012 Ecumenical Advocacy Days (EAD) conference in Washington, D.C., several officials from the United Church of Christ Justice and Witness Ministries denounced efforts at privatization of public services. They were speaking at a workshop for liberal church activists called: “Privatization: Eroding Jobs, Accountability, and Democracy.” True to the weekend’s Social Gospel themes, clergy, lay activists and church bureaucrats voiced opposition to ceding government monopolies to the free market. One speaker even argued, “We need to defend the government.”
EAD was sponsored by most Mainline Protestant denominations plus liberal Roman Catholics orders and other Religious Left groups.
