Jim Winkler, who heads the United Methodist Church's General Board of Church and Society (GBCS), has angrily denounced Virginia Governor Bob McDonnell. In the latest edition of the GBCS's Faith in Action e-newsletter, Winkler condemned McDonnell for supporting loosened gun laws in the commonwealth.
That the group, as the official Capitol Hill political lobby for United Methodism, supports gun control comes as no surprise. It has been pushing exclusively liberal causes for decades now. With its offices located across the street from the U. S. Supreme Court and the U.S. Capitol, the GBCS has busied itself by opposing U.S. federal budget limits on social welfare spending and by supporting Obamacare’s mandate that even religiously affiliated employers must insure contraceptives, abortifacients and sterilizations. With regard to gun control, Winkler himself chairs the Faiths United Coalition to Prevent Gun Violence, a coalition of leftist religious clergy.
