With no reference to Las Vegas I think the next political plan should be 7—7—7. Thou shalt not commit adultery. Thou shall not commit adultery. Thou shall not commit adultery. Elder Neal A. Maxwell with urgency once said: “The keeping of the seventh commandment is such a vital shield! By lowering or losing that shield, the much-needed blessings of heaven are lost. No person or nation can prosper for long without those blessings….Those who in various ways persistently foster and intensify this often drug-drenched drama of immorality—whether as promoters, enablers, facilitators, or profiteers—will also then face and then feel all the misery they have caused countless others!”
Current events bring attention to loyalty in marriage and the importance of not breaking the seventh commandment. When the Lord said, “thou shalt not commit adultery…or do anything like unto it” he was emphasizing complete fidelity in thought, word, and action. “A man shall…cleave unto his wife, and they shall be one flesh” (Genesis 2:24); “Have ye not read, that he which made them at the beginning made them male and female…what therefore God hath joined together, let no man put asunder” (Matthew 19:4, 6). The Lord’s voice is strong in scripture—Loyalty to spouse is a fundamental truth. Marriage is ordained of God. When we treat lightly, ridicule, attempt to redefine, or mock the covenant of marriage between a man and woman we forfeit the blessings of heaven.
