The Duty to Save the Humans

Tragedy in the news is no surprise anymore, but sometimes a crime story cuts right to the heart. This happened for me last week when I read the news of the Canadian woman who strangled her newborn son, and whose sentence for infanticide was suspended in court. She had been convicted twice previously of second-degree murder, but appeals courts threw out both convictions.

Upon hearing this, it didn't surprise me to find that Canada has no legal restrictions on abortion. In fact, Canada is one of only a few countries in the world that has no laws restricting abortion at any point in a woman's pregnancy. It is legal to terminate the fetus right up until birth and so, it seems, it isn't so far a leap in logic to allow termination of a child just after birth.
