Last week, I knelt to pray in the Capitol Rotunda with other religious leaders because our elected officials need a moral wake-up call when it comes to budget choices and addressing the national debt. After an hour of prayer and singing in this sacred civic space where an image of George Washington exhorts Congress and a statue of Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr., stands in deep reflection, we were led away by police. Our civil disobedience honored a proud tradition of prophetic witness and was meant to send a clear message to those in power: A just society does not ignore the most vulnerable.
