Rep. Todd Akin: Liberals Have 'Hatred for God'

Missouri Rep. Todd Akin is facing criticism after a comment he made Friday, telling supporters the liberal Democrats have a “hatred for God.”

Speaking Friday, Mr. Akin, when asked on his thoughts concerning a recent move by NBC to remove the words “under God” from the Pledge of Allegiance during coverage of the U.S. Open earlier this month, said the policy represented the “heart of liberalism.”

"I think NBC has a long record of being very liberal and at the heart of liberalism, really, is a hatred for God and a belief that government should replace God," Mr. Akin said. "So, they've had a long history of not being at all favorable toward many of things that have been such a blessing to our country."

The Missouri Republican continued, saying the network "” which later apologized for the incident, saying it was a mistake "” had assisted in corroding America.

“This was something that was done systematically, it was done intentionally, and is tremendously corrosive in terms of all of the values and everything that's made America unique and such a special nation,” Mr. Akin said.

The comment comes as Mr. Akin, who is challenging Missouri U.S. Senator Claire McCaskill, remains in a dead heat with the Missouri Democrat. Recent polls show Mr. Akin and Ms. McCaskill in a statistical tie, while the Missouri Republican continues to build support for his bid. A Public Policy Poll released earlier this year shows Mr. Akin and Ms. McCaskill tied, 46 percent to 45 percent.
