Mormons Don't Worship Prophets and Apostles

The presiding authorities of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints will be addressing membership once again this weekend. And once again some are purporting that Latter-day Saints worship the prophet and the apostles. One article is floating around with a variation in the headline: Mormon president can do no wrong to religion’s members and For Mormons, What Does ‘Follow The Prophet’ Really Mean?

Without question Mormon’s give deference to the prophet and the apostles. However, they don’t worship them. They follow their counsel because they speak and represent the mind and will of the Lord. When the Lord called the original Twelve He said: “Ye have not chosen me, but I have chosen you, and ordained you, that ye shall bring forth fruit.” He also called seventy other men to help them minister among the people (see John 15:16; Luke 10:1; the Lord created their offices, not Joseph Smith. Not Thomas Monson).
