The problem with medical advances is that, eventually, they become a victim of their own success.
This is one of the reasons why the anti-vaccine movement has traction; people focus on the dangers of vaccines while overlooking the far greater danger of becoming infected with measles or pertussis. But, because these devastating childhood illnesses are largely absent from the industrialized world, some people assume that they have "gone away." Out of sight, out of mind.
