When I was a kid, cutting-edge technology belonged almost exclusively to Walt Disney, with his animatronic birds and other cartoon delights. Our eyes opened wide as the army of empty armor fought off a Nazi invasion in "Bedknobs and Broomsticks."
Nowadays, of course, Saruman the White can bring up a more fearsome army of orcs from the muck and mud of Middle Earth and have "Lord of the Rings" viewers hiding their eyes in fear.
