Friedman, 59, died in Orange County, Calif., Sun., Jan. 9, after being hospitalized for several days at the end of a long battle with multiple sclerosis. Among her best-known songs is “Mi Shebeirach,” a prayer for healing in Hebrew and English.
Friedman transformed Jewish worship, particularly in Reform congregations, with her powerful musical interpretations of scripture and her folksy sing-along melodies. As a performer, composer, recording artist, feminist and teacher, her music crossed generational and denominational lines and carved a powerful legacy of authentic Jewish spirituality, according to a statement from the Union for Reform Judaism (URJ).
