She could have been a doubly disgraced single mother, with her fiance knowing full well that he had nothing to do with her swelling belly.
He could have dumped her, maybe even violently. That would have been the norm.
Sure, the father of her baby took credit for the deed.
He promised her that they were in this grand adventure together, but it wasn’t as if she could reach out and hold his hand when the pains rippled through her young body.
So, easily, for all practical purposes, she could have been a single mother.
