The Grinch Who Wants to Steal Graduation

I read this weekend of an attempt by the Americans United for the Separation of Church and State to induce the Cherokee County Board of Education to forgo holding high school graduation ceremonies in a local church.  This apparently is not the first time the organization has contacted the Cherokee board.  Should the Board not give in to this pressure, a lawsuit could be in the offing.

Indeed, Americans United has made a habit of pressing school boards that hold their graduation ceremonies in churches.  Two lawsuits are currently underway, one in Connecticut and one in Wisconsin.  In Connecticut, a federal district judge granted a preliminary injunction against holding high school graduation ceremonies in a sanctuary.  That decision is under appeal.  In Wisconsin, a federal judge dismissed a similar suit, granting the school district’s motion for summary judgment.  That decision is also under appeal.
