Obama's Xavier Speech Draws Few Protests

Among the stops on Obama's itinerary when he visits New Orleans to commemorate the fifth anniversary of Hurricane Katrina is a speech the president is scheduled to give at Xavier University, a Catholic school in New Orleans. You may remember that the last time Obama spoke at a Catholic university--giving the commencement address at Notre Dame in 2009--there was a bit of an uproar. This time around, however, despite the best efforts of Fox News and some pro-life activists, his appearance is prompting little more than a few isolated squawks. What gives?

The right wing can get any phony controversy it wants covered as news. They just didn't pick this one. Maybe it's because they're all perfectly happy to watch the folks in the MSM chase their tails over the completely fake mosque controversy.-As NY GOP Congressman Peter King put it, "in terms of social issues, the raging controversy over the Arizona border laws is providing more than enough ammunition for Republicans in key districts. 'The Arizona immigration law is there, there's no reason to be raising an issue of gay rights' as a wedge, he said." The right-wing paramedia, and therefore the MSM, are already hopped up about other petty, ephemeral, zero-substance; don't really need this one. Plus you don't roll out a new product in August.

What gives?

Amy, you forgot:

- It was a mostly fake, over-hyped controversy in the first place.

"Why There Are No Notre Dame-Like Protests Over Obama's Xavier Speech"

.Pretty easy. Most, that would be nearly 60% of all Americans could care less about Obama or what he says anymore. 99.9% of what he does say to Americans are lies anyway..People would listen to Porky Pig give his rendition of the Gettysburg Address before listening to the quack, lame a$$ you all voted into the White House.

People would listen to Porky Pig give his rendition of the Gettysburg Address before listening to the quack, lame a$$ you all voted into the White House..Glenn Beck is going to do a rendition of the Gettysburg Address in DC tomorrow? I'll dvr it.

So Dubya - aka Mushmouth from Fat Albert - delivering ANY address for eight years wasn't enough torture?.Remember, YOU started the name-calling, bub.

Who could possibly protest the appearance of someone like Obama who supports killing infants who have survived abortions? Obama said that prohibiting mothers and their abortionists from killing infants who have survived abortions would place a "burden" on those mothers. Does Time magazine know if Obama has any objections to those mothers eating the remains of said infants? If so, what is the basis for Obama's objections? He's a militant vegan? Such meals contribute to the "global warming" hoax? Please advise, Time magazine.

Amy Sullivan being a religious reporter is like putting Mao in charge of the reunification of the Christian Church in China..Amy bows down weekly at the altar of Obama, the Grand Poobah of all atheists and Muslim-lovers.

Amy, nice cheap shot at FOX..very professional and classy. I don't seem to remember you ever complaining about MSNBC carrying a story you disagreed with. Keep your liberal tinfoil hat on and go over to KOS where you belong.

Is that the same Catholics that believe in social justice as did Martin Luther King? You know that social justice that Fox and Beck hate.

Beside being French Canadian, I am also a Catholic who is pro-choice, for gay marriage, etc.

Will I be arrested at the border? LOL

lizzie, only if you enter through the southern border, Texas or Arizona.

As I said about 1000 times during the HCR debate, and was demonstrated, the US Conference of Catholic Bishops does not speak for all Catholics..I would link to a current piece in Commonweal discussing this very point "The Limits of Authority" but what's the point?.Amy Sullivan simply isn't very good at her specialty..She misinforms her readers by omission.

You are right for the US Conference of Catholic Bishops. Same thing here in Canada. Catholics do not form an homogenous group.

Catholics are catholic..But that doesn't serve the narrative.

If you say so, it must be true.

The time I was most proud to be a member of the Catholic Church was during the time that many priests and nuns (not always approved by the Pope or Bishops) participated in MLKs marches for feedom and the poor and their joining the sit-ins and freedom rides down south. During the 60s and early 70s there was a real social justice movement within the church.Unfortunately, after Vatican II the conservative members of the church have to often abandoned what John 23 was trying to teach us.

Facts! They exist, though they will never appear in an Amy Sullivan column. To wit:The CARA study of 1,007 Catholic voters found 41 percent unaffiliated with either the Democratic Party or Republican Party, with 38 percent who are registered Democrats and 21 percent who are registered Republicans. In the CARA study:

-- Seventy-eight percent said the U.S. should guarantee basic health care for all citizens.

-- Fifty-eight percent said a woman should have the right to choose an abortion.

-- Forty-one percent said they believe all human life, from conception to natural death, is sacred.

-There is an interesting story in there. But why bother to do reporting? Just regurgitate the prefab "culture war" story, yet again.-Usually I'd be more polite than this, but Amy Sullivan has made it clear that she will never, ever, ever read a thread, so whatever.

It sends a very bad message for any sitting President to deliver an address at a college. Colleges are full of elitists and it's a known fact that higher education provokes thinking. Do we really want our young people to think? There are many highly untrained people to do our thinking for us. Facts and evidence have poisoned our very thoughts. Many of our young people look up to the President because of the money to be earned from speaking fees after they leave office. Having a President speak at a college sends the wrong message.

For once I would like to read through the comments section of swampland without seeing the vitriolic nonsense newfreedomdumbass posts on here.

Welcome to another Friday evening with Amy Sullivan and the NewFreeinTexteeSpobChips!.Where Clueless meets Tasteless to produce dumbness.
