God, Guns and Ganders

You know who else sold a lot of books this year? Phil Robertson and the rest of the redneck cast on A&E's hit show Duck Dynasty. The mighty Ducks already had five books on the New York Times bestseller list with more on the way. Then the Duck Commander himself opened up to GQ, sharing his thoughts on the Bible, sin, gays, vaginas, and so much more. This earned him a suspension by A&E and instant story-of-the-week status. Arguments about Robertson easily outstripped all Fox News promoted coverage of the War on Christmas. However the suspension issue is resolved, the Duck Dynasty dust up serves as a useful marker in America's culture wars. In 2013, these conflicts increasingly pitted traditional religious believers against America's courts, entertainment industry and the polite, un-redneck opinion of the country's VIPs.
