Binders Full of Women

For Halloween of last year, Mormon feminist Joanna Brooks dressed as a binder, a lighthearted take on Mitt Romney's remark about trying to increase female participation in government. 1992 was called Year of the Woman, after the election of several Democratic female candidates to the U.S. Senate. 2013, the Year of the Mormon Woman, proved to be a more unpredictable, transpartisan event. Some Mormon women made a big deal out of wearing pants to worship and campaigned for women bishops and/or greater inclusion for gays. Others stoutly supported the Latter-day Saints' Salt Lake City leadership on these and other matters. Still other schismatic Mormons sister wives launched a legal challenge to Utah's polygamy laws. They struck a serious legal blow to monogamy that could have ramifications far outside of Utah.
