Augustine Didn't Read the Bible Literally

Several times now I have seen the following quotation from Augustine cited in support of modern-day explanations of biblical inspiration:

“If something there [i.e., in Scripture] strikes a person as absurd, it is not permissible to say, ‘The author of this book did not have the truth,’ but, ‘Either the manuscript is defective, or the translator made a mistake, or you do not understand.’”
