In the wake of New York State’s Marriage Equality Act, which legalized same-sex marriage in the Empire State, exercises in recriminations have pointed straight at Saint Patrick’s Cathedral on Fifth Avenue.
Critics say Archbishop Dolan’s heart wasn’t in the legislative fight over marriage. If he had wanted to stop gay marriage he could have, some complain. If he really wanted to halt Governor Andrew Cuomo’s campaign for the bill, he wouldn’t have gone to Seattle for a meeting of the U.S. Catholic Bishops Conference, but rather moved into and never left New York’s state capital of Albany.
